Absolutely, Axel. That is indeed the point.
The idea of using Facebook instead of email is not to use it the same way as one used email.
The brand has an opportunity to be visible as often as daily, to the fan. That privilege is not to be abused by pushing sales pitches each time!!

Interesting way to look at it as it is from the "enemy's" point of view. But certainly also very important. email goes to spam an as such the spammer (marketer) can't deliver any longer. So one aspect of the "new email" is to make it marketing resistant and focus on communication between people.
Axel
http://xeesm.com/AxelS

Great post! I agree with it and our company needs a fan page. And I agree that intrusive sales techniques don't work so well these days because everybody suffers from over-communication. I read somewhere that email is the new phone, I guess it stands to reason that FB is the new email. So, what's next ... mobile is the new FB???? Actually, I think it already is. Most of the status updates and pics from my friends are via mobile.

Samudra,
What you say makes sense.
Having said that, we are moving from being intrusive and aggressive in sales, to being subtle and mingling with customers and prospects, as a way to their wallet.
In that scenario, the FB updates are a far better way to get there, than direct email!

FB has opened up a new frontier for marketers, but has it replaced email?

Although FB is growing, it still cannot beat the ubiquity of email. Of course, depends on what you are selling, and where.

Another point is that the post from the fan page has to be made to "float" to the top of the user's home page. This can be engineered, but can sometimes backfire.

More importantly, the practice of un-fanning pages will soon start, when too many companies start doing the same thing.

In my opinion, it would be best to employ a judicious combination of both FB page updates and EXTREMELY targeted emails. Probably, having exclusive deals and bargains for each medium would keep customers interested in both (and help us pinpoint which 1 is more effective, if only for that particular brand)

John,
Thank you for the comment. While in theory, what you say is right. However, there is generally a lot more fatigue that has set in, with regards to email and the sensitivity to spam is larger there, than in Facebook.
Also there are many brands that have utilized Facebook to build good, strong customer communication channels. Few of our clients have reaped good benefits. The post is largely based on experience from working with clients!

Thank you, Isha.
How can a small website use social media? Well, that is what our business is all about. Well, not just for small businesses. For small and big businesses both.
